Value of Australian vegetable production

  • The total value of vegetable production rose by 9.5% from $2.8bn in 2005/06 to $3.1bn in 2006/07.
  • Potatoes are the largest crop by value, accounting for almost 17% of the total in 2006/07, followed by tomatoes, lettuce, and mushrooms.
  • The top 6 vegetables in 2006/07 (those mentioned above plus onions & carrots) accounted for 55% of the total, up from 51% in 2005/06 reflecting the strong rise in lettuces.
  • The strongest increases in 2006/07 among major crops were lettuce (78%), cucumbers (53%), beetroot (47%) and watermelons (40%).
  • The biggest declines were asparagus (44%), rock & canteloupe melons (21%), capsicums (19%), and French and runner beans (19%).
  • The value of other vegetables rose by almost 16% in 2006/07 taking their share of the total to 11%.
